Why Does Itunes Delete All My Tracks On My Iphone When I Download New Tracks

Hi. When I download new content to my iPhone from iTunes it deletes all existing tracks on my iPhone for some reason? It appears to delete everything else but keeps the new content I have just download. I am baffled and unsure what to do?! Can anyone with a better knowledge than mine help?
